Top 8 Funny Popular Games
Video games are good at portraying big-action spectacles and tough tactical challenges, but it's a rare game that attempts humor. Whether through slapstick, satire or subversion, these funny popular games are guaranteed to make you smile.
From the quaint English village of DeathSpank to the science-themed idiocy of Science Weapons, these games all offer laugh-out-loud fun.
1. Katamari Damacy
Keita Takahashi's 2004 game is a whimsically addictive joyride where you roll up everything around you, living or not. The game's lack of restrictions feels liberating; even a thumbtack is fair game.
The King of Cosmos's rambling dialogue is funny, and his understanding of the universe seems close to that of a child (with some charming errors). It's fun to watch a giant katamari pick up something as small as a twig or a person. Afterwards, they flee in terror and make humorous noises. Then the King gloats.
2. Monkey Island
An unforgettable cast of characters and an engaging story are hallmarks of the Monkey Island franchise. Whether lampooning reality, the absurdity of pirate lore, or even the earnest corniness of Guybrush Threepwood, this series has always managed to find humor in everything.
The game's voice actors (Dominic Armato and Alexandra Boyd) sound just like the originals, while the addition of new characters makes this installment a welcome return to form. The series would not be complete without LeChuck, the Voodoo Lady, and a handful of other memorable faces.
3. Portal
The Portal franchise has become a cult-favorite thanks to its challenging gameplay and deceivingly in-depth story. The player controls a silent female protagonist tasked with navigating a series of increasingly lethal test chambers using a unique teleportation device.
The infamous companion cube has become a staple of the franchise. The game also features a number of funny jokes.
GLaDOS is portrayed as having a human past that she forgets and denies. Despite this, she manages to successfully defend Aperture Science from the Combine.
4. The Outer Worlds
The Outer Worlds is a corporate space RPG that, to put it simply, wears a fake mustache. This game by Obsidian Entertainment explores weird new worlds, seeks out life and civilization, and spends a not insignificant amount of time shooting the living hell out of it.
This is a layered, branching RPG where choice and consequence are a constant presence. Completing quests and interacting with characters leads to a fascinating story about a dystopia of corporate oppression. One of the most interesting aspects is how random flaws pop up on your character, causing passive stat penalties in exchange for a performance boosting perk point.
5. Just Die Already
Released in 2013, Just Die Already is an old people mayhem sandbox game. Players are kicked out of their retirement home and must complete a set of tasks to earn retirement tickets to cover living costs.
The gameplay can be cumbersome to control and the physics are wacky but this is part of the charm. The bucket list system adds enough direction to keep goal-oriented players interested.
This game scratches a certain itch, especially for those who enjoyed Goat Simulator. It can get repetitive quickly though.
6. Fallout: New Vegas
Fallout 3 was great but New Vegas takes things to the next level with its colorful characters, special weapons and power-hungry factions. From the heat-blasted Mojave Desert to the colossal Hoover Dam, this 2008 game immerses players in the world of post apocalyptic Las Vegas.
The story begins with the Courier en route to New Vegas with a package to deliver for Mojave Express. But Benny and his gang of thugs ambush the courier near Goodsprings, steal the Platinum Chip and leave them for dead in a shallow grave.
7. Fable
Fable is a series of games that explores the blurry boundaries between fact and fable. The game takes place in the fictional land of Albion, which is full of quaint little towns and villages with names like Oakvale and Knothole Glade.
Players can make decisions that affect the kingdom and its citizens. These choices include everything from putting out fires to naming children. Occasionally the games become controversial, such as when one viewer called out the queen for being weirdly unattractive. This sparked a backlash from other gamers.
8. Sniper: Ghost Warrior
Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 is the latest entry in this sniper series. The cynical could argue it's one note due to level and objective repetition but that's the opposite of what the game aims for.
The story follows mercenary sniper Sergeant Wells and Delta Force operator Cole Anderson as they bring down the fictional Latin American dictatorship of Isla Trueno. Wells sections are stealth based with semi-realistic sniper mechanics whilst Anderson's segments are traditional open-world shooters. The game even received an expansion pack that sends the duo to another country hunting down Isla Truenan remnants.
